Are There Tough Offroad Trails in Bangalore? Absolutely! Here’s How to Experience the Adventure of Achalubetta Offroading
Bangalore isn’t just about tech parks and coffee shops; it’s also home to rugged, off-road trails that are ideal for adventure lovers. One such spot is Achalubetta. Just an hour’s drive from Bangalore, this location offers breathtaking landscapes, challenging trails, and a chance to immerse in nature.
Achalubetta Offroad Adventure
Achalubetta was our first real off-road experience near Bangalore—and it became even more special because it was the first trip after the arrival of our Jimny. This trip taught us plenty of off-road lessons, from mastering trail driving to ensuring the vehicle remained unharmed. The joy of exploring these rough terrains with family and friends made the experience unforgettable.
I first heard about Achalubetta through the Bangalore Jimny Group (a local group for Jimny owners), which frequently organizes trips and shares trail updates. The natural beauty and tough off-road trails immediately drew me in. However, Achalubetta isn’t a place to explore solo; the tough trails call for teamwork. On this trip, we were joined by Prajul and his family in their Mahindra Thar CRDE and Anto’s family in their Gypsy King. We coordinated our plans through a WhatsApp group called DW Community, which made it easy to arrange the details.
Planning the Adventure
The thrill was in the details—selecting a Saturday, planning the meetup, and gathering the essentials. For off-roading, I rely on 100% cotton shirts and cargo pants for comfort throughout the day. My checklist included essentials like a camera, food, water, chairs, off-road ropes, a tire inflator, a shovel, and an ax—all packed and secured in the Jimny’s boot.
At 5:30 a.m., we set off in the dim morning light. The sunrise painted the sky as our convoy gathered, with the yellow fog lamps on Anto’s Gypsy casting a cozy glow. And so, our journey began.
Into the Trails of Achalubetta
Located in Kanakapura, Achalubetta is about 58 km from Bangalore. The early morning drive was refreshing, and seeing Achalubetta slowly come into view through the mist was mesmerizing. After an hour on the main road, we turned onto a village path—a narrow, age-old route that wound through houses painted in cheerful colors, passing bullock carts and oxen. Before long, the asphalt vanished, leaving us on a true off-road path.
Summer often leaves these trails covered in dirt and stones, but after the monsoon season, they transform into challenging off-road routes. Large ditches and uneven ground required constant vigilance. Each trail presented its own unique challenge, and for off-road enthusiasts, this was pure fun. With a Thar CRDE, Jimny, and Gypsy King in our convoy, we were ready for the adventure.
Scenic Rest Stop
As we climbed, the scenery became even more enchanting. Dense reed forests and thick trees shaded the trails, providing a refreshing escape from Bangalore’s city life. While taking a break, we noticed large footprints—likely from an elephant that had passed through earlier. The possibility of encountering wildlife added to the excitement and kept us on high alert.
Navigating further was challenging, particularly with my Jimny’s standard tires and no underbody protection. Fortunately, Prajul’s experience helped; he navigated from the front and directed me through each obstacle. Despite occasional struggles, our teamwork kept the adventure safe and exciting. Along the way, we even spotted a few elephant herds, adding an extra thrill.
The Summit Experience
After several challenging trails, we reached the summit. The view was worth every bump and turn: a panoramic vista of Kanakapura, complete with a majestic statue of Nandi and a small temple. A small pond, regularly frequented by elephants, enhanced the natural beauty, while star-shaped flowers brightened the scene.
Without delay, we set up a small camp by the pond, brought out our stoves, and cooked a meal together. Surrounded by nature, with only the sound of rustling trees and chirping birds, it was a beautiful moment, filled with laughter and stories. The serene ambiance made for a memorable experience. We also took drone shots, videos, and photos to capture the beauty of Achalubetta and immortalize our adventure.
After a couple of hours, it was time to pack up and start the journey back. But it was full of terror.
